Retired Member Update:
September 2010

Chief Ted Peacock - Retired Chief from Orem, Utah:

How time flies when you are having fun, or should I say, when you get older?  It's hard to believe it has been 15 years since I retired..

My career in Law Enforcement started on my 23rd birthday in 1961 with Orem City Police Department.  I worked myself up through the ranks of the department.  In 1978 I was appointed Police Chief.  Two years later Orem City consolidated Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services and I was selected as the Director of Public Safety.  After 34 years of service with Orem City I retired in 1995.

I was President of the Utah Chiefs of Police Association, and represented Utah as the SACOP Representative of IACP. I also served as General Chairman of SACOP and was on the Board of Directors of IACP.

My wife Cynthia and I have been married for 53 years, and lucky for us, all of our children and grandchildren live in Utah County.  Shortly after I retired, Cynthia  and I left Orem to pursue our dream of living the country lifestyle.  We purchased a log home and acreage in the rural area of south Utah County.   We are on the west side of the I-15 between Payson and Santaquin.  After extensive remodeling and an addition, we have molded our home into a very unique and pleasant place to live.

Cynthia has decorated our home with her collection of antiques and my collection of western collectibles.  We located an old log cabin in Sanpete County that we were able to purchase.  With the help of our sons we dismantled the cabin and put it together again in our backyard.  It is furnished in the pioneer era.  Occasionally guests or family will stay in the cabin.

We keep busy with activities and hobbies we enjoy.  Cynthia is the area President of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and also teaches the lessons in her local camp.  I belong to the Sons of Utah Pioneers.  I have four horses that I enjoy.  With grandsons it is not hard to find some to go riding horses with.  I enjoy riding in the mountains in the summer and the west desert in the fall and spring.  I also enjoy doing leather work, I have made horse tack including my own saddle and chaps.  Some of my other hobbies include making and restoring horse drawn buggies.  I have also restored some antique furniture.

You really never retire,  about five years ago an old informant of mine contacted me with information regarding some bank robberies.  He wouldn't give the information to anyone but me.  We cleared up five bank robberies in Utah and Colorado.

For you Chiefs who are still working, keep up the good work.  Support your officers and stress the importance of integrity and professionalism. When you retire make sure your Department is a better place because you were the Chief.  Have a good hobby and keep busy.

Sincerely,

Ted Peacock
Director of Public Safety
